A Morning Between Caffeine Deficiency and Engine Noise
The Wrong Cap – and the Right Woman begins early in the morning. I park my car, still half in caffeine deficiency. Next to me stands an old luxury car that had clearly seen better days. In the driver’s seat a guy with bathrobe vibes, cigarette in the corner of his mouth, engine running.
The Cap That Doesn’t Fit
I notice the gas cap is open. I knock on the window, tell him. He asks me to close it. But the cap doesn’t fit. On the cap is the bold name of a completely different manufacturer. I say: “This cap doesn’t belong to this car.” He shrugs: “No idea, it’s my wife’s car.”
The Right Woman
At that moment his wife waves in the background. Well‑dressed, perfectly styled, like from a commercial. Hair pinned up, spotless boots, flawless look. The guy looks like he slept the last three nights in a bowling alley, yet his wife looks ready for a luxury magazine photoshoot. Just like the wrong cap doesn’t fit the car, he doesn’t seem to fit the woman — and that makes the scene unforgettable.
Goodbye with a Smile
I say goodbye: “Take care, man, good luck.” He replies: “Thanks, buddy.” As he walks away I see the back of his 80s sweatshirt full of lint and freshly cut hair. Some people drive old luxury cars with foreign gas caps, chain‑smoke in bathrobes, and still have the kind of wife who could walk any fashion show. Things exist that shouldn’t — and sometimes reality is stranger than fiction.
When Reality Writes Better Than Fiction
The Wrong Cap – and the Right Woman shows that reality is more bizarre than any fiction. Sometimes it is precisely these moments that remain.
